Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly feature hosted over at Breaking the Spine!
This week's pick: A Study in Charlotte
by Brittany Cavallaro
release date: March 1
"The last thing
sixteen-year-old Jamie Watson–writer and great-great-grandson of the
John Watson–wants is a rugby scholarship to Sherringford, a Connecticut
prep school just an hour away from his estranged father. But that’s not
the only complication: Sherringford is also home to Charlotte Holmes,
the famous detective’s enigmatic, fiercely independent
great-great-granddaughter, who’s inherited not just his genius but also
his vices, volatile temperament, and expertly hidden vulnerability.
Charlotte has been the object of his fascination for as long as he can
remember–but from the moment they meet, there’s a tense energy between
them, and they seem more destined to be rivals than anything else.
Then
a Sherringford student dies under suspicious circumstances ripped
straight from the most terrifying of the Holmes stories, and Jamie and
Charlotte become the prime suspects. Convinced they’re being framed,
they must race against the police to conduct their own investigation. As
danger mounts, it becomes clear that nowhere is safe and the only
people they can trust are each other.
Equal parts tender,
thrilling, and hilarious, A Study in Charlotte is the first in a trilogy
brimming with wit and edge-of-the-seat suspense."
I love Sherlock Holmes. Ever since I saw the Great Mouse Detective when I was, like, five, I was hooked on him. I read some kids versions of the stories, I watched the old black and white movies, I graduated to reading the real stories, I saw the movies with Robert Downey Jr, I am obsessed with the BBC's Sherlock.... etc, etc. It's a story that has always fascinated me, and there is another representation of it in YA (The Secret Letters by Leah Scheier). BUT I am truly SO excited to see a modern telling of the descendants of Holmes and Watson. It is a dream come true for me, and I just hope that this book lives up to my expectations! Fingers crossed.
What are you looking forward to this week?
xx

The Great Mouse Detective was my introduction to Holmes too, (followed by the Basil Rathbone movies and Doyle's novels). A Study in Charlotte sounds like a fun retelling and will have to keep it in mind.
ReplyDeleteI loved that movie when I was little (and, who am I kidding, I still do) Hopefully this will live up to the rest of the Holmes adaptations out there :)
DeleteSherlock Holmes is one of my favourite literary characters. This sounds like it's going to be a great series. Thanks for sharing!

DeleteYes! I can't wait for A Study In Charlotte to come out! I love Sherlock Holmes - I'm obsessed with BBC Sherlock too. And I just recently started reading the original Sherlock Holmes stories. It's funny that you mentioned The Secret Letters - I read that one years ago. I've also heard great things about the Every series by Ellie Marney, which is also based on Sherlock Holmes and set in modern day. I've been so excited for this since it was announced and I hope we both love it! I adore the idea of a story about Sherlock and Watson's descendants.
ReplyDeleteOlivia @ Fluttering Pages

DeleteOh I have seen this one around it sounds rather interesting. I always love a good mystery!
